Competence in the area of Educational Leadership
Dr. McIntyre
4/06/2011
This is part of the work I have completed during my Argosy Master’s Program for Adult Training and Education. This is an example of work that demonstrates competence in the area of Educational Leadership ( Argosy, 2011).
Reflection on Work Sample Demonstration of Outcome
The work that demonstrates competence in the area of educational leadership is assignment M2A1 from the course E6710 Organizational Management & Development. This assignment illustrates my knowledge of the use of the educational theory of Educational Leadership and my writing skill. This assignment reflects the aspects of the educational theory of Educational Leadership and how theoretical knowledge of action, can be applied in dealing with practical problems. This assignment also reflects my writing style.
After completion of the course, I have created a modified version of the assignment, it is reflective of my current level of knowledge and skill. The following is the modification of assignment M2A1 E6710 Organizational Management & Development. It is reflective of the fact that now I am aware of the benefits of action in leadership to direct my professional practice. Now I realize a need for students to cultivate the skills they will need to function and become productive members of our global community.
Areas for Improvement in the Work Sample
The area I feel I need to improve in as a result of learning over the course of my program is to create strategies which will be beneficial in my taking action as a leader. One strategy which may be beneficial is an integration of diversity into conducting leadership duties. Another area I need to improve in is clarifying my writing skills with regards to stating any mission, goals or objectives, so they will be communicated effectively and understood by the reader.

A key concept from the chapter that would guide my behavior as an educational leader is
a theory of action. This theory is concerned with how theoretical knowledge can be applied in
dealing with practical problems.
According to Owens and Valesky (2007), a theory of practice is a composite of theories
of action that is underlying, and provides direction to, one’s professional practice. A theory of
practice is an individual’s own view of causal relationships: it occurs with the processes of
gathering, organizing, and integrating facts and experiences that one has encountered (p. 73-
74). This concept combines many learned theories together and explains that they should be put
into practice. My examples are engaging students to develop the skills they will need to function
and become productive members of society and also collaborating with the districts to improve
my skills through professional development. This concept is very important in educational
leadership role. It also helps enhance interaction with students and communication with other
educators.
The reason I have chosen this concept is because, as an educator it is an important factor
to apply the skills and theoretical knowledge we have acquired in books, to the practical
situations we deal with on a daily basis and throughout the course of our career.
This is a key idea because it is a problem solver in the organizational situation. Problems
are being solved by actually applying the theories of practice in the educational curriculum.
The behavior implications of a theory of practice suggest that each of us as educational
leaders should create and clearly express a theory of practices rooted in our own knowledge and
understanding, along with the way in which to apply it.
